Employers have a responsibility to ensure all their workers have appropriate clothing, including PPE clothing, to carry out their tasks safely. It is usually the facilities manager (FM) who oversees the performance of workwear in large companies. The FM must make sure the clothing is clean, hygienic and fit for purpose – and that means working with a supplier committed to maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness and repair.

In-house laundering or use of a non-specialist workwear provider are false economies. A specialist supplier will work with the FM to prioritise health & safety, ensuring correct selection of garments, for example, and using washing processes that eliminate the risk of contamination. The supplier should also match the customer’s standards in terms of safe working practices, corporate responsibility and sustainability.

Hospitals, care homes and other healthcare organisations rely on their linen providers to maintain the necessary supply of clean sheets, pillow cases, nurses’ uniforms and other textiles. That requires effective management and stock control to guarantee consistent delivery and avoid the loss and theft of linen that plagues the NHS in particular. RFID tagging is increasingly being used to achieve these goals.

In addition, the hospital and the supplier share a Duty of Care to staff, patients and the public, which means that laundry processes must eliminate harmful bacteria and avoid risk of infection from soiled linen. Laundries and textile renters must show Due Diligence in maintaining the highest standards of hygiene, eliminating all risk of harm from their products.
